Is technology moving us forward, and/or enslaving humankind? What do you think? Spengler writes 100 years ago:
"Growth is a product of the Machine, which insists on being used and directed, and to that end centuples the powers of each individual. For the sake of the machine, human life becomes precious. Work becomes the great word of ethical thinking; in the 18th century it loses its derogatory implication in all languages. The machine works and forces man to co-operate. For that very reason Faustian (western) man has become the slave of his creation."
He then goes on to perfectly, if poetically, describe the Industrial Age emerging between 1900 and 1920.
"Threat or menace" was a course title from a humorous adult education fake catalog from the 1970s.
