They say that more Americans are driving more now. I don't think that's true.
Here's what I think is going on:
1.Some, but fewer, Americans are driving more, much more.
2.The average person is driving fewer miles.
3.The younger you are, the fewer miles you are driving.
The total number of miles being driven now is Up, no question about it. But so is the number of drivers in the United States. And yet the percentage of younger Americans with a driver's license is down. See this story in The Atlantic. Not huge, but it IS down. And train ridership and light rail ridership is at an all time high. So everyone cannot be driving more. I will bet truckers are driving more miles. But not the average young person. Stay tuned.
