Now we have to teach our kid what to do when the police stops him

As a white parent, I didn't see this coming.  Julie says we should teach our foster grandson, who is black, what to do when the police stops him. 

And given the racial profiling in our community, much less the rest of the country, him being stopped is not a matter of "if" but "when."

Our foster son, his father,  has been stopped for no reason so many times, I have a whole file of "warnings" from the police for things that are not illegal with our car.  As soon as our black son borrows our car, suddenly the car is full of violations, until Julie and I start driving it again.  

With so many unarmed black young men being shot by police.....

Ford CEO Clueless on Young People Not Driving

Ford CEO Mark Fields, even/especially with 20 something year old children, appeared clueless about why young people are moving into cities, and of course, why they are driving less.

Here's the interviewer's question: "Why do you think people are moving back to cities in North America?"

Fields:  "I don't know.  All I know is I have two 20-somethings who both go to the University of Michigan, and all they want to do is go live in New York City.  And I can't explain what the phenomenon is."

Really?  Really?  Thousands of NineShift readers know what "the phenomenon" is, and how it has already shaped life in the 21st century.  

 

Just What We Need - - Less Attentive Drivers

Car makers are now admitting one thing:  driving can be "tedious," in the words of one auto spokesperson touting a new driverless car.  

That's a shift from the fun times they have promoted for the last century.  

Now they are suggesting drivers can be even less attentive with the new driverless vehicles.  

Just what we need on the roads, less attentive drivers.  

For-Profits Try to Take Over Lifelong Learning

For-profit providers, having failed miserably with K-12 schools and higher education, are now looking at online learning for adults as their next big opportunity to make money.

It poses a huge threat to colleges and schools.

Currently, the public looks to colleges and schools for continuing their education, as the nonprofit sector has credibility and of course, a 100 year track record of serving the entire community.

So for-profits are going through colleges and schools to offer their for-profit online learning. 

One, or both, of these scenarios will damage colleges and schools:

1.A for-profit garners enough market share to dominate and control and subordinate the colleges and schools.

2.One or more for-profits find a way to reach the public directly, without involving the colleges and schools, dealing them out. 

Either way, our history demonstrates time and again that nonprofits best deliver education in society, serving everyone.  The for-profit online providers are a threat colleges and schools should take seriously.
