The next big challenge for business and society will be training Gen Y.
Right now business does not want to spend money on training- - nobody does, nobody ever has.
As we have predicted this month, around 2016 Gen Y will be getting good jobs as the economy expands, Boomers retire, and we need more highly skilled college educated professionals.
And so those Gen Y workers will need training, professional development and continuing education. Gen Y, to be clear, is not wanting. The Boomers and Gen Xers needed continuing education as well.
The problem is that business, having boosted wages, provided health care, flex time, and telework, will be pushed to provide continuing education. Gen Y- - with a huge college debt, little savings, and first time employees eager for the basics of a middle class life-- will have few resources to pay for training themselves. Skimping on training will be, as always, the wrong answer.
