States are now facing the unsolvable problem of how to fund highways moving forward.
The issue is unsolvable because Gen Y is driving less and less, as NineShift predicted in 2004 and proved in 2010. Added to that is the likelihood that Boomers, like previous generations, will decrease their driving as they hit age 65. Added to that is the current refusal to increase the gas tax, which has paid for highways for the last half century. Added to that is the difficulty of burdening a declining number of drivers with the increasing highway costs, especially since car drivers will trend poorer moving forward.
Stay tuned as the issue of funding highways grows more vexing as cars continuing to go into decline.
