A rich man, in Churchill's 1912 book about society then, like today, believes he alone is responsible for his success, noting, "I'ved tried to do my duty as I saw it, and it comes to this - - that we who have spent the best years of our lives in striving to develop this country have no thanks from our children or from any one else."
Later, he says, "It has become the fashion to-day, thanks to your socialists, reformers, and agitators, to decry a man because he is rich, to take it for granted that he is a thief and a scoundrel."
Another parallel: John D. Rockefeller (in picture) believed his success came directly from God, and he was representing God on earth in his opposition to workers' rights.
