I a took a train for the "first" time yesterday. No, not my first train ride. But this was the first time (and not the last) when everyone said the train was faster getting to the airport than a car.
Just 10 miles from downtown Philadelphia to the airport, but commute estimated to be one hour. So I took the train, faster, no worries, conductors very helpful, and of course a lot cheaper.
The other 'new' thing was a sense of cockiness and 'we're onto something' in the 30th Street Station, the main Amtrack station in Philly. The station, clean, up to date, shops. But then there's the signs. (Click on the photo for a better larger image)
This is no down-and-out bus station. This is an up and coming transportaton hub of the 21st century. They offer "Valet service." They have an "Acela Club" for elite frequent train riders. And my favorite was the ad that read, "It really is our way or the highway." Even in America, cars are in big trouble.
