Does your milkman cometh?

Delivered groceries on their way.

I took our AFS Japanese student Kentaro to the store and we bought milk. Third time today I had to use the car, and it doesn't feel good anymore.

On the way home, I told him about 50 years ago, when I was a kid, the milkman delivered milk, and bread was delivered as well.  He told me his family in Tokyo has groceries delivered now.  Every Monday, the grocery company delivers groceries, brings a new catalog, and takes the order form back for next Monday's delivery.  Coming soon to knowledge workers' who really value their time.

If you are old enough to remember 2000 when the online grocer went bankrupt, commentators predicted grocery delivery would 'return' in 2010. We'll see how fast it happens, but happen it will.

I used a dairy delivery service shortly after I moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, in 2001. In addition to milk/cheese/butter, their products included orange juice, apple cider, bagels, (and cream cheese, of course), bread. I cancelled after a few months, mostly because they also deliver cookie dough, and I found I had much less will power when filling out an order form than I do when I'm face to face with the stuff in the grocery store.

The Boston area has an online grocer called Peapod (part of the Stop & Shop chain). If the ubiquitous Peapod delivery trucks are any indication of success, online grocery shopping isn't waiting to return until 2010 in the Boston area. It is here now.

I used Peapod for years, and can say the only thing better than online grocery shopping is having your spouse do the grocery shopping.

As an aside, I also grew up with the milkman delivering milk in glass bottles (into the 1980's). It was great when it would freeze solid in the milkbox in the winter or curdle from the heat in the summer. Aaaah... the good old days.

Our local fishmonger comes by with fresh fish once a week. Unfortunately his supplies are dwindling as Asian exporters are paying the fishermen more than the local market will. Soon there'll be no more fish and we'll all be in trouble.
